Marvel Fusion Featured As Climate Tech Innovator At London Tech Week
Fusion energy pioneer Marvel Fusion discussed the essential addition to renewable energies like wind, hydroelectric and solar
“Fusion is closer than ever,” underscored Moritz von der Linden, CEO of Marvel Fusion, at the ClimateTech 2021 event, as part of London Tech Week, on September 21, 2021.
Speaking before an audience of impact investors and climate tech entrepreneurs as part of a specialist panel, von der Linden affirmed that “Fusion is an essential addition to the global energy transition. Free of toxic emissions and requiring infinitesimal amounts of sustainable natural resources, our fusion process is clean, safe and reliable.”
Marvel Fusion, a Munich-based energy startup co-founded by von der Linden, is playing a leading role in harnessing the global potential of fusion and laser technologies, developing a completely new approach to fusion.
In sharing a series of perspectives and conversations with panelists and audience members, Von der Linden highlighted fusion’s potential in the global energy markets:
“One milligram of fusion fuel contains one million times more energy than one milligram of petrol.”
ClimateTech, presented by London Tech Week in association with Founders Forum, has recently added a special emphasis on the technological innovation required to solve climate change and the entrepreneurs who will deliver it. The event regularly draws esteemed international climate leaders and experts, including acclaimed British broadcaster and natural historian David Attenborough (2018) and former US Vice President Al Gore (2019).
An impressive array of energy innovators joined Von der Linden and moderator Mark Campanale, the founder of independent financial think-tank, Carbon Tracker, in what was a fascinating discussion: Enass Abo-Hamed, the CEO of H2GO Power, an authority in hydrogen energy storage; Igor Kocis, the CEO and founder of GA Drilling, which has invented a unique new drill to unlock the limitless potential of ultra-deep geothermal energy; and Amit Gudka, the founder of Field, which is rapidly accelerating the build-out of renewable infrastructures needed to reach net zero emissions.
Everyone on the panel was convinced that new, innovative ideas are needed to enable the global energy transition and to fight climate change. Von der Linden stressed that time was of the essence and that renewables can’t bear the burden alone: “We need to increase speed to fight climate change. We can make fusion happen to complement all renewable energy solutions with a high-density energy solution.”Gudka, the founder of Field, in agreement with Von der Linden, added that “We need better baseload sources for electricity which geothermal energy and fusion can provide.”
Founded in 2019, Marvel Fusion has developed a novel energy solution taking advantage of the rapid advancements in laser- and nanotechnology to create a laser-initiated inertial confinement fusion using quantum-effects. The company’s technology aims to eliminate existing problems with fusion such as hydrodynamic turbulences to bring commercialization within reach for the first time.
During the fusion energy generation process, atomic nuclei are fused together with the help of a high-energy laser. The process releases large amounts of energy that can be efficiently converted into electricity. Marvel Fusion’s technology does not produce climate damaging carbon dioxide or long-lived radioactive waste, nor does it pose an uncontrollable safety risk.
From the 2030s onwards, Marvel Fusion plans to build and operate commercial fusion power plants in the gigawatt range to offer electricity in the future energy market.
